Karl Side Table

Karl is a round side table with a gentle, protective shape. Four broad walnut legs curl outward at the top like cupped hands, holding a ring of slender spindles between them. The tabletop is laid in Swedish elm burl, almrot, a veneer whose knots and swirls make every table unique, and framed by a thin rim of brass. Below, a shelf of polished brass catches the light and keeps books and evening things within reach.

How Karl is made

Karl is made by hand in Valdemarsvik, a small town on the Östergötland coast. There, craftsman Anders Mattson shapes, joins and finishes each table in Swedish walnut, the way Swedish furniture has long been made: slowly, and one at a time.

Wood and veneer

Karl's walnut and elm burl are finished with a protective coating. Wipe clean with a soft cloth dampened with water and a little mild soap, then dry with a clean, soft cloth. Avoid furniture polish, oil and abrasive cleaners, and keep the table away from direct heat and lasting damp.

Wood matures in colour with light. During the first months, leave the tabletop clear of vases, books and coasters so it can darken evenly. After that, move objects around now and then, as anything left in one place for a long time can leave a mark in the tone of the wood. Sudden shifts in temperature and humidity are also best avoided.

Brass

Wipe the brass rim and shelf with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and chemicals, which can scratch the surface. Over time, brass develops a soft, warm patina that is part of its character.

Repairs

If the coating or wood is damaged, contact a furniture restorer. Small damage is easier to fix when it is tended to early.
